So if I have radeon 5970, is it good or bad for me to upgrade to the latest drivers?

This the open-source version of the drivers - most of us are probably using the Catalyst version. I've never tried hashing with the open source version - maybe there is a good reason...

Now with the new open source version you can under/over volt. That right there makes it worth looking at.

...the open source one does not support OpenCL, so no mining...
