Hi guys,

New to Bitcoin and Crypto, so have inevitably made a couple of schoolboy errors. Two issues, hopefully some of you can shed some light and help me solve them.

1. I attempted to invest in an ICO and sent over 0.01BTC (min required investment) via Bittrex. Obviously, Bittrex took their fee (idiotic of me not to realise this before processing), so the amount sent over became 0.009BTC which is less than the minimum required investment. As a result, I have BTC floating in thin air, details here:

2. I used the Mycelium app yesterday to send $50AUD worth of BTC directly to my ledger nano s hardware wallet via a bitcoin ATM. I followed the instructions here under the sub heading 'Mobile HD Watch-only Wallets'

https://coinatmradar.com/blog/how-to-buy-bitcoins-at-atm-directly-to-hardware-wallet/

MyCelium shows the transaction as confirmed, but 0.00435BTC of unspent output. The amount has not been added to my hardware wallet.

Any ideas on resolving these two issues?

Cheers,

djam

1. Don't invest in an ICO from an exchange. Most likely the exchange will get your tokens and you may never recover them.

2. You said the minimum was .1 but you sent .009. Do you mean the minimum was .01?

3. Bitcoins are either in your address or their address. They do not "float around" . If they are not considering your transaction an investment but instead a donation that's not really floating around, that just means they took your money.

4. I don't have a hardware wallet but all the newbies seem to have one for some reason. I guess because securely generating a paper wallet is more work and it's easier to throw away $100? Idk. I don't get the appeal. It's relying on someone else's tech when you don't need to. Anywho, did you generate that address on your hardware wallet? Are the funds in that address? That means they sent and you are good to go.

Thanks for the reply, cpfreeplz.

1. Fair enough, point taken.

2. Yes, sorry I meant 0.01BTC min investment.

3. I contacted their support and their response was: "I'm really sorry but it is considered invalid because it was less than 0.01. If it is below 0.01 the blockchain takes it in as a fee and won't update the tokens." Are they actually helpless, or have they just stolen my money? To be fair, it was my fault for authorising the transaction at an amount less than the minimum investment.

4. I used the 'extended public key' on my hardware wallet which then generated a barcode that I scanned in to MyCelium. I then scanned the MyCelium barcode at the ATM. Funds seem to have sent, but they're not appearing in my balance on my hardware wallet.

Cheers,

djam

Yeah sorry I just don't know how hardware wallets work. You may want to move your post to the appropriate spot now for that question.

If you sent your funds and they confirmed, they just took your money. They definitely aren't helpless, but it sounds like they won't be refunding you. If they are a legitimate company they should either refund you or just give you the tokens you're owed because you were only under because of high miners fees.

This is pretty much bullshit... the "blockchain" doesn't take anything as a fee. Those coins have been assigned to a private key which THEY are in control of. They may not consider your investment valid as it is below 0.01 BTC, but they can sure as hell access those coins and send them back. If they don't they're basically treating your payment as a "donation", which is an expensive lesson to learn... and a bit shit on their behalf.

It probably makes no difference in the long run because, as cpfreeplz has already mentioned, you should NEVER fund ICO's directly from Exchange addresses... fairly sure Bittrex even have a warning about this:
Quote from: Bittrex Withdraw Window
Do not withdrawal directly to a crowdfund or ICO. We will not credit your account with tokens from that sale.
So, you likely never would have got the tokens anyway Undecided

What wallet app are you using? The Ledger chrome app? If so, did you select "Legacy" or "SegWit" chain?

Hi HCP,

Thanks for your reply.

Lesson learned re: ICO / Bittrex - very naive on my part. They have a video on their site which demos the investment from Bittrex so I thought it'd be fine. The fund is Crypto Tickets FYI.

Yes indeed, I am using the ledger Chrome app. I've tried reinstalling and have checked both the Legacy and SegWit chains. Transaction isn't there. I've done a bit of digging though and realised it's because Mycelium doesn't support SegWit. I've lodged a support ticket with them to see if anything can be done. In the meantime, I went back to the bitcoin ATM and tested the Sentinel app using my extended public key and it worked perfectly - BTC loaded onto my hardware wallet instantly. Another lesson learned!

Cheers,

djam.
