Also is the cpu as important? Will an i5 do the trick just fine or should i save more and go for i7? I am not so tech savvy and have no idea about how often this type of tech gets updated, so basically just curious as to whether within the next year there will be much better cards and processors?

Bro Dual core also far enough to have connected the multiple video cards in the rig and make the money out of it. If you want to make your personal computer works better you can go with the i7 processor with the 4th or 8th generation one.
Try to mine the altcoins with the graphic cards bro. I am sure you will be able to make more money you can get in bitcoin mining. Now eth value also growing faster so mining the ethereum would be the best move in mining platform.

As the others have stated, though, if you have no interest in using the CPU to mine a separate coin... a cheap CPU is fine.

I hate to "waste" the CPU so I prefer to use chips that mine decently & point them at Cryptonight.

I would say only IntenseCoin (ITNS)

I started mining ITNS at the end of 2017 if I remember right mid December, and I am still mining it with my lap top on CPU with 5 cores.
I get the most amazing profit from this coin.
Working on CrpytoNote technology it is still easy to mine
Give it a try you will see you wont regret it Smiley

They have the most stable pools and amazing community I must say that also Smiley
CPU mining it's still not dead, give it a try Smiley and you will see what I am talking. Smiley
