800x600 as a common desktop size? Maybe in 1993 =) I'm sure your average BitcoinPorn images are larger than that!!

CC is public domain with the only restrictions in this case being an attribution requirement and a non-commercial restriction. Boy you must also hate BSD, Linux, Apache, Firefox, etc. what with their "restrictive" license requirements that are only in place to give credit for good work and protect from commercial misuse.

For the record, I am just pointing out a strategic mistakes in propagating memes even if that mean sacrificing author attribution and protection from "commercial misuse". Yes, I am a public domain proponent, as my whole magazine is published under the public domain. Still, don't let that dissuade you from accepting a good argument.

That's nonsense. Instead, what we have is a community of self-interest and sometime altruistically motivated user. So we're commercially oriented community of bitcoiners.

Hostility much? I don't give a shit about what license you choose. I am just pointing out how licenses like that limits the spread of a work.

You're right, but every bitcoin company that wanted to use it would have to ask. That means a flood of emails, constant annoyance on both side of the matter, and ultimately, selection of a different mascot. 1. Unholster pistol. 2. carefully aim at left big toe. 3. squeeze trigger. I will grant the "Official" was wrong, though.

Unholster pistol. 2. carefully aim at left big toe. 3. squeeze trigger. I will grant the "Official" was wrong, though. Dude, she just wanted to share her work. She made something and was proud of it and wanted to show it to a community that she thought might appreciate it. Maybe the choice of licensing was wrong for *this* purpose but she didn't make it for *this* purpose. And for those who are pissed that she licensed it at all, here in the U.S. you have to - otherwise your work is considered copyrighted by default ( http://www.copyright.gov/title17/92appa.html -or- http://www.copyright-laws.com/pgs/copyright-basics.html for those that don't speak legalese) This would be why bitcoin is released under the MIT license, Linux under the GPL license, BSD under (go figure) the BSD license, FireFox under the MPL (Mozilla Public License) and so on. She wanted her work to be publicly available but didn't want it to be ganked for corporate misuse by the first company that liked it so she CC licensed it non-commercial. Nothing is stopping her from changing that license if the situation changes and you all seriously need to go take a Xanax or something before you pop a vessel over someone you don't know choosing a license you don't like for IP that you have no stake in... Yeesh.

I only said that because CC NC is sort of the go-to for image licensing unless circumstances require otherwise. I think her logo might appeal more to the female bitcoiner crowd (read: her and the 2 other women here)

I like the owl too. I was going to suggest Bubo from Clash of the Titans. http://students.autodesk.com/ama/public/065/158/971344/Bubo_WingSpan.png <- I dont think hot linking is allowed. But I was concered with all the conspiracy types here they would link it to the Bohemian Grove and the owl there (Molok?). But there is another reason I didnt suggest it. Bubo is: An inflamed, tender swelling of a lymph node, especially in the area of the armpit or groin, that is characteristic of certain infections, such as bubonic plague, syphilis or cat scratch fever to name a few. I think Im developing a fondness for the small golden alpaca.

Just like some forum members! Yeah, Quixote was pretty much a figure of complete ridicule. But more recently he's become more associated with romantic valor and hope in the face of hopelessness--"to dream the impossible dream"-- and this is a noble association. Besides, Bitcoin is the subject of a lot of ridicule among the mainstream. So perhaps Quixote's example is useful both as an inspiration for noble ambition, and as a reminder of the dangers of irrational exuberance.

The irony of your claim when Bitcoin client isn't public domain. LOLZ. The icon for our non-public domain project MUST BE public domain. You know how bad it would be if our non-public domain project had a non-public domain icon? .... It would be like 9/11 times 100. Copyright (c) 2009-2011 Bitcoin Developers

Can somebody draw a Captain Bitcoin! ?
He fights for liberty in a world awash in decay and fraud.
He wears a mask, a cape, and a large Bitcoin emblem on his chest.

I agree that we should have more than one mascot for the Bitcoin Project, to emphasize its distributed nature. I propose that these should be Dorothy, the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Woodsman, and Scarecrow from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. If you haven't read the original book, you can download it from http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/55 . The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is regarded as an allegory to our current Federal Reserve System. An extensive analysis can be found at http://freedom-school.com/the_wizard_of_oz.pdf . In brief, here are some of the stronger points that suggest this allegory: - “Oz” is the abbreviation for “ounce”, which is the unit of measure for gold bullion. At the time the book was written, the U.S. currency was on a gold standard.
- The yellow brick road again suggests the nearly endless stacks of bricks of gold held at Fort Knox, which back the U.S. currency.
- Dorothy's shoes in the original book were actually silver, not ruby. She walked on the yellow brick road via silver, which is what many of the coins of the day were made from.
- Emerald City is dazzling to behold, and green throughout. Even the sky is green when within the city as is the sunlight that streams from above. However, this is only because all visitors are forced to wear green spectacles when in the city. If you remove the spectacles, the city is revealed to look no different than any other city. The green of the city is taken to be analogous to the “greenbacks” which are the paper currency of the U.S. If you remove the ink, though, the bills are revealed to be nothing more than paper.
- The Wizard's palace is spectacular, and the Wizard himself is terrifying and daunting. Surely nobody can oppose him. However, the Wizard is actually just an ordinary person. He is a fraud pretending to be more imposing than he really is. The Wizard is considered to be an analogy to the Federal Reserve, who controls the U.S. money supply and answers to nobody. However, if people collectively did not have confidence in the dollar, its value would be exposed as pure fiction and the Federal Reserve's power would immediately fade.
These four main characters of the story, with their intelligence, heart, and courage, overthrew the great and powerful Wizard of Oz. In fact, before the Wizard fled after being exposed, he handed the rule of Oz to Scarecrow, since he was the most intelligent person in the land. As you can see in the illustration above from the original book, the Scarecrow sits on the throne of Oz. Because of the analogy, and the near instant recognition that the general populace has of these characters, I can think of no better mascots to represent the spirit of Bitcoin.

This would do better as a contest, but I'm sure the community will come up with something eventually

If we really think this is a good idea which it might be if we put thought behind it than go to a forum with professional illustrators and offer a good bounty, something like 50 or 100 Btc and some ideas. I personally think the Bitcoin logo acts somewhat like a mascot. The format should be vector preferably svg.
