The Bitcoin network protocol was designed to be extremely flexible. It can be used to create timed transactions, escrow transactions, multi-signature transactions, etc. The current features of the client only hint at what will be possible in the future.

There's isn't native Honolulu exchange. You have to choose some international exchange.

Compare fees http://www.coinparator.com/compare-exchanges/ and choose one.

Compare based on this.

- best fees?
- is verification needed?
- if yes, are you able to meet verification requirements?
- maximal limit per day/month?
- payment methods?

Due to the state's interpretation of its money transmitter laws, Coinbase pulled out of Hawaii earlier this year. And Gemini's status for Hawaii has been "coming soon" for a long time (possibly since they launched). So, things don't look so great from the perspective of regulated exchanges. You might look into Bitstamp. Per this thread on Reddit, it sounds like Hawaii residents may be able to deposit and trade there.

Otherwise, OTC (LocalBitcoins) is probably your best option. You can also trade for bitcoins on the currency exchange subforum, e.g. trade Paypal funds for BTC.

With companies like Coinbase, Gemini and now Bitflyer, that's not possible. These exchanges require full identity verification before you can deposit/buy/sell on their exchange. That includes your State ID/driver's license and possible proof of residence, like a utility bill. To pull that off, you'd literally need to establish residence in another state. Bitfinex and Wex don't require verification, but they prohibit US customers, so I think you'll have trouble depositing USD.

I still think your best bet is LocalBitcoins. I see some active sellers in Honolulu. Check their listings here: https://localbitcoins.com/places/40658270/honolulu-hi-usa/
