So I've been interested in cryptos for a while but never mined at all and I'm just fiddling around to see how easy it is. I've installed cgminer and an running it through terminal on Mac. I have followed instructions and have no idea if I'm mining at the moment or what? These are the messages I am getting from terminal, could someone explain what they mean?

 [2017-11-27 17:04:37] Pool 0 difficulty changed to 2048

Probably sound like a complete idiot but any help would be great!

You cant mine without an ASIC device. What hardware are you trying to mine with? If you are just doing it with your CPU you should stop now.

Stop buying industrial miners, running them at home, and then complaining about the noise.

I'm considering purchasing some mining hardware but wanted to try and set it up first to understand how complex it all was before deciding. Based on those messages have I got a sufficient setup should I buy the relevant hardware?

I'm not sure what your budget is but any hardware you buy will have the software side if things solved. Avalon s have a separate controller, bitmain and ebit have Integrated controllers.

Based on the messages you are getti g you are trying to run equipment that isn't powerful enough.

I think it used to be the norm that you needed software to mine because it was done on cpu/you, and maybe even the first few generations of Asics. This is well before my time.

All you need now is hardware, and Internet, and a computer or laptop on the same network to access the controller and it's program.

Before you buy anything do a little research and check with a profitability calculator. Biggest hurdle is your electricity costs.
