Why do you need a Blockchain?!

Disclaimer: I love the blockchain technology and the whole cryptocurrency thing. But this post is talking about non-currency applications.

Seriously, this is bugging me at this point.

So many new projects coming along with "Blockchain this, blockchain that". Lets take a good example. Chat application on a blockchain.

WHY!?!?!??!

A blockchain is good when consensus is needed on the order in which actions happen, and when there is no trust involved.
So why in the world would a chat application be a good candidate for a blockchain..?!?

And don't even get me started on the thousands of other applications that use blockchains unnecessarily.

Just get a server. Host your chat application there. Not everything needs to be decentralized.

Mining wasn't originally a way to earn money. It was a way to prevent double spending. But nobody even thinks about that anymore, it's all about getting those block rewards. Come on "unique" mining algorithms, all based on the same concept.

Because people is now making ridiculous projects over the blockchain, and they do not even understand why blockchain means, they are just using that word because it has a lot of potential to do marketing.

There are some projects like Sex on the blockchain from a sexshop ico, i do know what has been about that ico, i thought that they rised more than one million dollars from this ridiculous idea.

And there would still be some more projects like this, they are like a plague . But if they are really good projects, then i dont see why they can not develop an idea over the blockchain, it is helping everybody in here at any way.

Most applications use it as a way to decentralize. Yes you can host a server for a chat application but what if that server gets taken down?

Hosting it on the blockchain uses all the connected nodes to do the data transfer and the client simply hooks in and reads the metadata (at least that's my understanding). Obviously a lot more crypto to it than that lol

Not only the blockchain, even majority of the developers don't know about the means of the decentralized itself. A lot of the project that only runs in the one blockchain and then said about that was based on the decentralized thing. This becomes a bes joke right now how the developers lack of knowledge about the crypto definition itself.

Anything that could be hosted on a traditional server makes it centralised. Now that everything is moving to becoming private and secure via decentralisation, anything people can think of that needs to secure people's privacy will pop up as a project. That's just how things are moving currently - on the hype train!

Agreed with you, is just because " blockchain " is mainstream right now on the internet and there are many scams projects based on.
