I pay my 15 year old brother for things in bitcoins (when he chooses to accept them ) Because he likes them for the store of value idea. No respectable kid that wasn't previously involved in illicit substances is going to do drugs because they have access to the silk road. At least I sincerely hope not.

Agree with jaywaka2713. The main issue with BTC is still the limited real word economical background. Hopefully this will change soon, but until then gambling sites, SR and Atlantis are the most handy places to spend BTC.

Jesus, it's getting hard to post a thought on this forum without someone attacking you for posting. Who cares if they want to raise their post count. That's a good thing. It means they are invested in their perception within the community and the more they post the more will rub off on them. If they end up a scammer later so be it. There's always time to browbeat them after they scam someone.

If you provide them with the means to convert to fiat, this is actually a good idea - it will teach delayed gratification for a potentially greater reward.

However, if your 16-year old son likes the idea of Silk Road it might not work as planned!

4) I might be an exception but I now exactly what silk road is and I have never even been on that site.

I also forgot that not every kid is a bad kid and will find Silk Road, but its definitely there. I just dont know if kids would want to jump through the hoops of figuring out Bitcoin, but it shouldn't be an issue as their parents are going through the hoops getting it for them. Some parents might also not like how there is no way to identify who their kids are paying.

I guess that's a fair point. At the end of the day, It will always depend on the personality of the kid. I learned a lot just by watching the weusecoins video so I guess that should be the first thing that parents should show and explain to their kids.

It is always up to the kid. That weusecoins video should be shown to everyone introduced to Bitcoin. It's very good and explanatory, but yet, easy to understand.

Nice. My youngest (still at home) gets the equivalent of $20 a week in Bitcoins sent to an Electrum wallet. I let her cash out to me if she wants to buy something or spend them on her own if she wants to. She bought a few things on Amazon back when SpendBitcoins still serviced the US market but since then she has become a hoarder. lol

She keeps telling me that she's going to be rich someday from her allowance. They really grow up too fast (and listen to dad a little too much I think).

If the aim of pocket money is learning about economic processes bitcoin is quite interesting but its currently limited spending possibilities and technical nature make it viable for older kids only, who can figure these things out.

Maybe paying part of the pocket money in fiat and part of it in bitcoin is an option.

The best option would be talking about economy and various forms of payment and saving with the kid and then letting him or her choose a payment option for pocket money. Again this is only likely to work at a certain age.

giving kids bitcoins is a noval idea. as it avoids that instant urge to spend money in their pocket. and it works well if the parent is also the FIAT exchanger.

the down side
$20 ($100/btc)last week is only worth $16($80/btc) this week.. expect your kids to complain. unlike banks that can put customers on hold for 40 minutes or tell you they wil respond in 48 hours. you cant ignore your kids that easily this week

most other times of the year they would be thanking you.

Um, I wouldn't let me kid under the age of 18 use the Internet. You guys are crazy.

I set up a bitcoin wallet for my gf and thought of giving her a couple of coins. Then I realized there wasn't anything she could do with them. Foodier doesn't even deliver in her area.
