Have you read their notice on the website : https://multibit.org/

It is safe as long as you keep your computer safe. As it is the lightweight wallet it doesn't need to download full blockchain which is a big + if you don't feel like running a node in the network. It downloads only the block headers and it relies on trusting the nodes....

Another good wallet, if you are looking only for bitcoin is something like electrum which is also easy and simple to use with a lot of funcionality.

DON'T FORGET TO MAKE BACKUPS AND KEEP THEM SAFE!!!!
  - many people forget this or don't even pay attention. With bitcoin you are your own bank so you can't contact anybody if you don't take care of your backups/private keys.

Please read the sticky I made on the Multibit section If you haven't already. It's highly recommended to switch to Electrum.

It is safe to use and you won't lose your money losing it. Anyway it won't be updated anymore so you'll use an outdated wallet. Which version of Multibit are you using anyway?
