Noise level of mining rig

Hey guys, I'm pleased to join 'bitcointalk' community
I'm looking forward to build my first mining rig, currently looking at 4x1060s or 4x1070s, but the issue is, that I have quite small flat, so I'm thinking to keep my rig in a living room.
My concern is, how loud these mining rigs are, it's quite difficult to determine that watching youtube videos. I don't mind some noise, but don't really want to bother my girlfriend too much with another crazy idea

As long as you use a good ATX PSU like a EVGA G2/P2 and cards that have a good cooling, you won't have a problem. The most noise you will have is if you add a box fan to keep  air circulation around the cards. Not really necessary for just 4 cards in an open air rig though.

I have a couple of rigs based on the 1060's now and if you run them at power limit 65 or so the fans hardly spin and the rig is very quiet. You could easily keep them in a living room as the noise would be no more than maybe a small room fan running on the low speed setting.

I would also recommend using a SSD drive, as when I first started mining I tried to reuse some old HDDs I had laying around and the constant clicking of the heads moving is actually a lot more irritating than that of the cooling fans. This will be especially true since you and your girlfriend are going to be in close proximity to the rigs much of the day.

A low power limit on the GPUs and maybe additional cooling (big 120mm slow rotating and silent fans) will help you to decrease the fan speed on the GPUs which is normally the source of the noise.
It makes also a difference on which algo you are mining - Equihash consumes more than Dagger and thus produces more heat which requires a faster spinning fan that results in a higher noise level.
