Hi there,

I already have bought some bitcoins via localbitcoin and now I would like to give mining a try.

I have read a lot of the threads and I know that today anything less than an ASIC miner doesn't really makes sense economically.

All I have is a MacBook Pro and I don't really want to buy hardware at the moment.

Now here are my two newbie questions:

1) is it AT ALL possible to mine with the MBP alone and if so, what software would increase the chances of success - the QT client bulit in miner or some other mining software (which)?

2) Since the hashing power of a single mac is almost nothing compared to the network I wouldn't consider pool mining but prefer solo mining on the off chance that one day I solve a block with it

(now all the mathematicians will tell me that the possibility is next to nothing - but every once in a while people hit lottery jackpots, so why not try this for a while and gamble with a little electricity instead of buying a lottery ticket every week...my computer is always switched on anyways).

Ok, If someone could shed some light to my questions I'd be really grateful.
(a word to the noob-haters: please move on unless you have constructive comments/arguments - I have already seen how people get bashed down for asking things which are considered stupid by "the elders" - Thanks!)

1. You can mine with just your mac and nothing else using DiabloMiner. Nothing will really increase your chances of success.

2. Solo mining is just a matter of what setting you select so.

There is a small chance you could solve a block by yourself(extremely small). The real problem is that mining will burn out your hardware turning your mac into a lovely looking brick.

BitMinter client also works fine on Mac.

Hook up some ASICs to your MBP and you will be good to go.

Ok, thank you guys for your replies!

Since mining with a mac means ultimately destroying it it doesn't seem to be such a good idea any more. Sad

ASIC USB Miners...well if you could get them for 20-35 USD that could be interesting
but getting them for 100+ Euro as currently seems to be the regular price in EU I don't really see the point other than having a new toy with the BTC logo on it.

So I guess no btc lottery tickets for me and my mac.
Maybe one day another new generation of mining hardware will come along and we who missed the ASIC train will have chance to hop on then.

Thanks again!

Take care!
