This is a curious phenomena that I've been meaning to ask about.
I see a lot of posts with bitcoin addresses in the signature, as if to say, "If you like what I say, give me some money." And now here you are explicitly and directly asking for a donation so you can buy something for yourself.
How much bitcoin is being passed around this way?
I'm not criticizing. I just find this odd and I wonder if there's a point of view I haven't considered.

I don't think many people give to them.
In the hardware section, helpful answers might get a small amount, but I've never did see anything come in when I had an address in my sig.
But we should criticize blatant begging, since building yourself a computer is only benefiting you. Go donate to wikileaks, someone who made a miner, or a pool if you have extra BTC laying around.

Block Explorer knows: Oh, I'm sure he does. But that link just shows me a bunch of keys and numbers. I can't see any information there.

that link just shows me a bunch of keys and numbers. I can't see any information there. There are three columns that matter, Block, Amount and Type. In the Block column are dates. In the Type column is either Received or Sent. And then there is the amount column showing the amount of BTCs in the transaction. From that data, the following table can be created: Received at this address 2011-06-16 | 0.05 BTC 2011-06-19 | 0.07 BTC 2011-06-23 | 0.08 BTC The original post was 2011-07-01, so all of these transactions occurred prior to the post. In other words, this solicitation has not yielded any contributions yet.

Well, I didn't include the Type column because I only cared about showing the transactions for type Received. If you look at the Block Explorer for that address, there are three rows, each showing Received. - http://blockexplorer.com/address/1KaKfWKk8busvMEzS7GXLrY8ENRMVUHt3e

If I wasn't already frantically mining myself for BTC, I'd shoot a bit your way just to see it update in the block explorer.

If you've ever played a MMORPG like World of Warcraft, this is a common phenomenon.
Noobs beg for coins, sometimes other noobs give them some small amount. It never amounts to much.
