Excellent TED Talk about the brain's recognition of patterns: http://www.ted.com/talks/michael_shermer_the_pattern_behind_self_deception.html.

Seems applicable to many things you see on this sub-forum.

One of my takeaways from this video was don't do your cocaine and TA at the same time.
