I have a budget of 1,000 USD to get some mining hardware, I'd like tangible mining hardware. I might get Block Erupter USB sticks in a USB hub plugged into a raspberry pi, but I'm wondering if there are any better options out there that will get me mining as quickly as possible (So no BFL year waiting periods please Tongue)

Buy a BFL Jalapeno from someone. I haven't checked what people are asking for them atm. I'm pretty sure you can get a Jalapeno + Raspberry Pi with USB hub and everything with 1000USD.

Not really. ASICs are so rare right now that none is selling them even if you want to buy. Wait for a month and there are much more options.
