You are automatically whitelisted if you buy a copper membership. You don't need to wear the copper membership, just own it. You can also be whitelisted for free by any staff member and a few non-staff, but we're going to need some reason to think that you actually deserve it. Do not ask me for free whitelisting.

Whitelisting is a not a license to spam. You will be immediately banned if you're found spamming, even if you bought a copper membership (and you will not be refunded).

Thank you theymos for changing PM limits. PM spam become very annoying. I often get lot of PM's from newbies, mostly with "ICO promotion services" advertisements. It's pointless to report such accounts, because almost all of them are newbies and they would just make new account after getting ban to continue spam.

There are a fairly decent number of people that create accounts for the purpose of contacting people for help with technical problems.

Do you think the max PM per hour/day might be a little low for those with no activity?

No. If they truly have a legitimate need for a higher PM limit, they can always petition a staff member to whitelist them or simply buy a Copper Membership.

They will have a fairly difficult time even petitioning a staff member if they are limited to 2 PMs per day.

A new user would use up his two PMs by sending a PM to someone he believes can help him, get referred to a second person, PM that second person, and would subsequently be unable to answer any clarifying questions or advise if troubleshooting recommendations worked.

I suspect part of the reason for the very low limits for 0 (and <15 activity) users is to combat PM spam, however one solution to this might be to force these users to solve a captcha when sending a PM.

A necessary sacrifice, in my opinion, given the onslaught that we currently have to deal with. Besides, this encourages the new user to be thorough and succinct in his/her initial petition, so as to not waste his/her PM. I believe this to be a good thing.

Also, any staff member can whitelist a new user, so there should not be any need to refer the new user to another staff member.

The question/issue is not necessarily regarding the forum/forum policy, but rather something about Bitcoin, a Bitcoin transaction of theirs, their wallet, etc.

In this case, the staff member can whitelist the user after verifying the legitimacy of the user's need, and then refer the user to the second person.

Thanks for making that change - my limit is more than enough for me.

With regards to tech support discussions for newer members, there seem to be 3 possible solutions.
  • Take the discussion onto one of the boards
  • Switch to email
  • Remove replies from the restriction counts

ICO scammers have been botting the forum spamming users en masse trying to promote their crapcoins. Staff were getting hundreds of reports of unsolicited spam so it was a necessary step unfortunately. This is why we can't have nice things.

I would like to see thread limitations as well. The number of threads a person can make in a day, there should be a limit on this, especially for a newbie. Maybe 1 thread a day will be enough for a newbie and if it gets deleted due to some reason(spam or whatever), he has to wait for next day to post a thread again. Otherwise, some spammers keep posting a new thread until they get banned.

Ahh, I wasn’t aware ICO advertisement spam was that much of a problem. I haven’t received any of those messages that I can recall (although I have received many similar spam emails from likely hacked email accounts who likely got my email from hacked databases). I’m not entirely surprised to hear this though.

You might want to update the info in the sticky in the newbies and beginers board. It's still got the old PM limits listed there and I couldn't find and info about why I couldn't send any more messages. Luckily someone gave me a link to this post. It's not really something you can search for to find any info 'cos if you search for PM you get loads of post!

Thanks for the info Smiley

Same here. I just simply report it after reading to all Administrator. I think currently that's the only solution to stop that newbie from spamming.

Do you think is difficult to add in ignore list all newbies automatically ?
