Is it easy to transform a script coin like litecoin into a sha 256 through a hard fork?

as in you want to go from a SHA265 coin too a SCRYPT coin too a SHA265 coin??
if so, wouldn't it just be easier to branch off bitcoin too begin with and work from there.
