I'm waiting on a power supply and am impatient  Grin

Will it work if I power one hashboard and the controller with an 850W PSU?

Sure can. I did exactly the same as you. Powered one board and the IO board to set a low frequency and then shut down and ran all three boards and IO on a 1000w EVGA P2 at peak effciency.
