I'm surprised we don't have a place where there are bounties placed on Bitcoin scammers like a marketplace of people who are close ( localbitcoins of scammer hunting lol ) to the perpetrators can hunt them down . All I know is I'm sick of hearing about people being scammed out of bitcoins etc., etc., ....

What does it say about this forum/Bitcoin that a market could exist for hunting down scammers? Also, what legal recourse is there to extract Bitcoin debt from someone? I'm sure you're not suggesting illegal modes of operation

Also, what legal recourse is there to extract Bitcoin debt from someone? Will if enough people in one area can show up with baseball bats and the proper equipment masks, etc., there should be no legal recourse for those obtaining a debt owed. I'm sure you're not suggesting illegal modes of operation I think its safe to say I am All I know is if there was such a marketplace I would think twice of pulling some of the shit that goes on around here...if anything its start of a deterrent

This is my problem right here. What if you've got the wrong person? Your version of "beyond a reasonable doubt" will be much stricter than the person who's just lost 1000 Bitcoins. Also, people trying to discredit Bitcoin or make a quick buck won't care if the correct person is identified. They'll just want to tarnish Bitcoin's name and/or collect a bounty.

And before anyone says it, yes I know "beyond a reasonable doubt" is for criminal prosecution, not civil.

Sounds like this hits close to home for you? I mean there is all that possibility of getting it wrong but maybe there are alternatives to beating skulls in but just need to be worked out.

It doesn't hit home other than I place a great deal of value on justice and if someone is wrongly accused, that's pretty unjust. I don't have a problem with people giving someone trouble if they're 100% the guilty party. I wouldn't stand for an innocent person being persecuted though and that could be me, you, your family, their friends or anyone else. If you cause injustice when you seek justice, what have you really achieved?

If only there were a way of voting on a person's honesty with a +/- score system. It could go green for good and red for bad...

bounties for scammers does not work. its been tried.
many people have said they will pay anyone X to find out who belongs to bitcoin address. xyz..
scammers come along put that address in a edited message from 10 months ago on a known scammer account they use to have.
and then using their clean account would say "look what i found".
basically ripping more money off of you. they even add false documentation to old necro messages that include fake email addresses, domains, home addresses all supposedly owned by the necro scammer username. purely to ensure there's enough dox to get the bounty.
the best thing is treat bitcoin like paper money. what would you do if a stranger you never met offered to sell you something.
just because it's bitcoin doesnt mean you can't do due diligence first.

I DO NOT TRADE OR ACT AS ESCROW ON THIS FORUM EVER. Please do your own research & respect what is written here as both opinion & information gleaned from experience. many people replying with insults but no on-topic content substance, automatically are 'facepalmed' and yawned at

That's actually a good idea. If someone stole 10 BTC from me, would make sense to perhaps offer 1 BTC for their personal information so you have a chance to recover your coins.

we need a reputation system
What's the point of having a reputation system when people can just buy a reputable account for $3.50 and use it to scam people with a fake 4th of july bitcoin giveaway To have a successful reputation system in any community, you need to know if people are who they say they are.

OP
Read the pirateat40 / Trendon Shavers thread.
That guy stole over $5M USD (at the time) from a LOT of people.
Everyone know EVERYTHING about him but no one when after him.
He's still living (probably very comfortably off the rising bitcoin price) in McKinney Texas.

Pirate at 40 was a disgrace to true pirates (and parrotheads) everywhere. I'd keelhaul him if I ran upon him in Texas.

Had to look that up: "a form of punishment meted out to sailors at sea. The sailor was tied to a line that looped beneath the vessel, thrown overboard on one side of the ship, and dragged under the ship's keel, either from one side of the ship to the other, or the length of the ship (from bow to stern)." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keelhauling
