Bitcoin addresses contain a checksum, so it is very unlikely that mistyping an address will cause you to lose money.

You need API? I suggest you use Inputs.io for instant payments.

I want to be able to send/ receive automatic payments. Will this work? I'll have a look.

Ehh. Kind of. I personally don't recommend it as it primarily works off-the-chain. It would require all of your customers to have an account at inputs.io. This is a very small portion of people, so it might prevent people from paying as it forces them to sign up for yet another account.

http://bitcoindevkit.com will send you the right direction it is only for PHP but future uses will be released as C++ versions too.
