Is this the right place to ask this question?
I want to run Bitcoin-qt as a windows service so the server doesn't have to be logged into and will autostart on boot, but in 0.8.3 (which I just noticed is beta, so should I go to 0.8.2?) I want my server to run it 24/7 so it'll be ready to accept bitcoins anytime and so once I start mining it'll be good.

I tried sc \\servername create "BitCoin Server" binPath="C:\Program Files\Bitcoin\bitcoin-qt.exe -server -datadir=d:\bitcoin" DisplayName="BitCoin Server" start=auto

but that didn't work

in the options it has auto start on login but not on system start

Can someone help?

Check out the daemon instead of the full qt client. This will probably work much better as a service. If you're using Win7 or 8, it'll be located in "c:\Program Files(x86)\Bitcoin\daemon\bitcoind.exe". If you want to query your wallet, you'll have to use the command line if this is running.

Running the deamon should still work with no issues. You won't have to connect it to a miner since you won't be mining solo. You'll connect your miner to a pool somewhere so they have no interaction at that point.

I was able to create a service with this

sc \\servername create "BitCoin Server" binPath= "C:\Program Files\Bitcoin\daemon\bitcoind.exe -server" DisplayName= "BitCoin Server" start= auto

seems I needed a space after each =

Guess I still need to move the data directory, last time it wanted a resync and is still doing that

would it be possible to make a web interface (via aspx and json?) so that once I have it all up and running I won't even have to login to the server itself? (of course limited so only reachable from in the house.)

also whats the current blockchain size? before it had said it was upto date at about 9gb but a video I saw said it was like 20gb, and now my bitcoin folder is about 11gb

btw if such a web gui would be do able how hard would it be?

Ok while I don't yet have it working as a service I do have the data directory moved and fully synced with the network

so figure while I wait on my ASIC miner I'd try doing a little cpu mining (ya I know its not going to get anywhere) but just to test that I can get a miner to connect to bitcoin-QT

so I've downloaded guiminer

and I figure as I have bitcoin-qt opening with the -server switch I should be able to get them to talk

any info on this?

Ok oddly I can't get GuiMiner to connect localy to the server (IE using 127.0.0.1 or localhost or one of it's IP's)

but I opened guiminer on my desktop and it connected (though my gtx570 is only pulling 1.4MH/s (so um ya the asic should do far better when it gets here)

but it troubles me that giuminer can't connect to another app on the same system

well I was just thinking how are bitcoins distributed in pools? is it based on an effort ratio? or just evenly?
