I came across this TED talk by Anil Seth recently and found it so interesting.

The talk breaks down current research into consciousness and how we perceive reality.
The body of research is still in early days but there have been some fascinating insights made.

The current understanding of consciousness is that we hallucinate what we perceive as reality around us, in a controlled manner.

In essence, our brain makes predictions about what exists in the outside world.
As your sensory inputs are received your brain can then confirm or deny what it had predicted about the world around you, and adjust accordingly.

Anil tests this theory with various experiments and all seem to confirm the theory. Through tricking the senses we can change the persons perception of their reality.
