Even if you use Bitcoin through Tor, the way transactions are handled by the network makes anonymity difficult to achieve. Do not expect your transactions to be anonymous unless you really know what you're doing.

You can buy it on any of the following exchanges:

https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/bitcoin-gold/#markets

Stick with the ones that have the better volume, but if you need anonymity I guess I would use Yobit.

I would use the official wallet, but having to sync a full node for some altcoin must be insanely annoying.

But I don't see any other official wallets. Anyone know if there is an Electrum Gold of sorts?

Buy Bitcoin, then look for some Exchange that makes the exchange for you, you have Yobit that does it.
But if I were to start an investment if I were you, I would buy Bitcoin the same or else I would buy one part in Bitcoin and the other in altcoins that are promising like Waves, Litecoin, Dash, Ethereum, Monero and so on.
If you enter the world of crypto-coins always remember Bitcoin is the boss.
