Do direct transfers work okay or it's best to transfer to a desktop wallet in between (exchange-wallet-exchange) ??

They work just fine be careful to read the instructions prior to depositing though because some exchanges have some rules and amounts you need to have present in order to get the funds. For example on one exchange I used recently it told me if my Ethereum deposit was less than 0.1 or something the balance wouldn't show up until the amount I deposited exceeded that. Be careful but apart from that you should be okay.

Direct transfers are obviously cheapest.
However note that not every exchanges support ERC20, so that's the only thing you need to be wary of.
