Is this possible?  I have a 10-port USB hub that can only hold 6 miners.  If I upgrade to a higher amperage adapter (6A?), I should theoretically be able to support 10 USB miners right?

Has this been done around here?

Every time a block is mined, a certain amount of BTC (called the subsidy) is created out of thin air and given to the miner. The subsidy halves every four years and will reach 0 in about 130 years.

You would most likely be using more amperage then the hub is built for so it will get rather warm.

You would most likely be using more amperage then the hub is built for so it will get rather warm.

or burn. I would keep a very close eye on it. Or better yet, just buy another powered hub that can handle the power draw of all those mining sticks.

It is irrelevant...... a device draws the current that can pass related to the resistance, not what might be available.

So even if you connect it to a 5v 100A supply... it will not blow up.. UNLESS you try to pull more current than the copper will support. (thats why your toaster does not explode when you connect it to the power grid)

That is to say... you would be advised to open it and look at the power distribution tracks. if they are nice and wide.. then you will be fine... BUT if the power distribution tracks have been designed for
less then you have a problem.

Go look in IPC-D-275

Basically for 1oz copper @ 6A the power traces MUST be ~4mm wide... or have additional solder on them....


or go google for "pcb copper requirements  for current".

Am sure the GND will be fine, I see no issue with soldering some extra cable across the +5v terminals between outlets. I have a couple of cheap 10 ports on order to experiment with. If all looks good I will power them of a 1200W PSU that I have brought for my K16's and post some pictures.

Will be G8 to have all my miners on 1 PSU as to avoid extra wiring clutter   Grin

Exactly, my current plan is 2 bfl LS, 3 K16`s, 1 Bitburner, 25 Block erupters, and 5 K1 nanos all of a single psu.

Then put all the psu`s in a draw for back up.

I have 12V 120mm case fans on order for cooling that I can run of the same source.

I have an 10 port orico(anker) at the moment but no go on rpi so has to be replaced. This seems the best option, let the suckers have all the juice they want..The PSU has 28Amps on the 5V rail so should be good for 50 USB`s  Wink

I have modified a Rosewill 7 port hub from Newegg (it originally had only a 2A adapter) to run from an external PSU.

The board traces sent power from the input jack through a set of three schottky diodes, one from the host port and two from the DC input jack. Doing that prevents power from backfeeding and still lets the host computer provide some power to the hub and run it in an unpowered mode if the adapter isn't connected.

I desoldered all of them and bypassed the two for the input jack. The hub can now power as much current as the PSU will provide (within reason). I run my Raspi, four USB erupters, my BFL Jalapeno and a usb keyboard from it now.
