Roman empire is the greatest empire in my opinion. It was huge and lived for hundreds of years!

Rome was definitely a large empire, though it was not as old as some empires before it, it's scale was staggering at the time. Not just the land area but the various ethnicities as well.

China probably takes the cake for being the most long-lived. Even if you consider it starting from the Qin rather than the Shang dynasty, that's still a long ass time up to the Qing in the 1900s.

Now if we are going to talk about the leader, there's no doubt Genghis Khan captured the largest area during his lifetime. It all ended on death though, with the Mongol empire fragmenting and the descendants establishing themselves in different regions like the Yuans and Mughals.

I would still go for Alexander the Great. His empire stretched from Europe to most of Asia and Africa. At that time, it was huge considering the difficulties in logistics and communication. Compared to that the Roman empire was of a smaller size, and had a smaller population. The Mongol empire was larger, but most of the areas were wasteland.

The thing with both Temujin and Alex is that what they built collapsed after they died. They didn't set a proper line of succession and so their generals just split up their "empires". For example, Egypt which Alex captured, ended up in the hands of the Ptolemies.

There was a time when ancient Persian civilization became the most powerful kingdom in the world. Despite being in power for only about 200 years, Persia successfully conquered many areas up to 2 million square miles. Starting from Egypt to Greece, then to India and even throughout Central Asia.

The most famous empire of the world is:

the empire of Alexander the Great. If he lived longer, then, probably, there would indeed be one big empire in all the world known at that time;
we studied the achievements of the Roman Empire, its greatness and strength;
Byzantine Empire.
German kings, like all their predecessors and followers, strengthened their power by the military force and authority of Christianity.

II vote for the Roman Empire. It lasted for a long time and made the most significant contribution to culture, especially the culture of Europe. We still use their legacy.

Julius Caesar was a good general but he didn't create Roman Empire. It was build by Augustus. And because Roman Empire was the greatest, so Octavianus Augustus is my choice)
Alexander the Great also was a good general but his Empire die after his death.

You are probably right. They were too busy with conquering new territories, that they didn't bothered to properly integrate the newly acquired areas in to the kingdom. And we need to remember that  Alexander died at a very young age (32), and his death occurred prematurely. No one expected him to die so young, and that was one of the reasons why they didn't had a proper succession plan.

I'd have to go with genghis. As notable as alexander and the roman's conquests are, i think the mongols take the cake here. Well when it comes to influence today, that probably would be the romans but we have to consider that the mongols were nomadic people without really any stable form of government during genghis' conquests

I suppose it depends on your definition of 'greatest.' I assume that most of us in the western world would consider Alexander the Great's Empire as being the 'greatest' since we grew up hearing about him the most often and remnants of ancient Greek society are a large influence on modern western society, but consider the following:

1. Gengis Khan was born into nothing (literally - his father lead a small Mongol tribe that abandoned his family after his father's death), while Alexander simply succeeded his father for the throne.

2. Genghis Khan single-handedly built up the largest empire in world history (except for the British Empire, which we all know they didn't really fight for that so doesnt count), all while managing to unite warring tribes.

3. His successors lasted much longer than Alexander the Great's and founded empire's who's culture permeates throughout the east (think the Yuan Dynasty in China or the Mughal Empire in India)

4. (The piece de resistance, IMO): The dude was the king of the feigned retreat, whereby his army would actually turn their horses and pretend to retreat from an oncoming army while GUIDING THEIR HORSE GALLOPING BACKWARDS and shooting at their charging enemy with a bow. (Major points for badassery right there).

Didn't some of them build on top of what the previous ones built? Or others built. You have to take that into consideration. They all did not start at the same level.

The Mongols were good in looting and pillaging the enemy cities. But they never succeeded in establishing solid control over the territories which they conquered. For example, when the conquered Russia, most of the Russians simply migrated to the Northern part to escape from the warfare and enslavement.
