I would like to suggest you to atleast wait for few weeks/months  so that you can buy any coins at cheaper price, right now almost every coin is pumping like never before so buying them at peak prices right now can be risky.

ETC is yet to pump so putting some there at around $30 can be good decision, for long term holding xmr, eth, ltc, dash is good.

Don't go for super cheap if you don't know nothing yet. Choose top-20 coins with bigger potential. I think you can go with xem, waves, xmr, zch and some eth.

Whatever response I put down here, I'm 90% sure that you will get suggestion on similar coins only because I think most of the crypto lovers know these coins very well.
If you are coming as investors with long term waiting potential then you can choose,
1) BTC : The perfect choice for the newbie as it is secure and upto the mark when considered for long term growth.
2) ETH : Basically second most traded coin the crypto world with high market capitalism in the alt coin. Already spiked 2.5X of its base value and prodited million but still hope for many new comers.
3) Ripple : This is my one of the good investment ever I made, because it is now started moving upwards. The coin is centralised and related to real life project so higher chances of getting spiked.
4) Social Coin : This coin is still in the development stage but I'm mentioning it here due to its high throughput during the ICO sale.
5) NEM : The best choice with super low value but growing fast in the market cap. It was no 10 two days ago and now is at 8 number for its market cap.

The market seems not stable at the moment but if I gonna put my money on 5 alt coins then definitely I am gonna choose xzc,rise,ripple,zec and stratis.

While you choose the altcoin you have to moniter the price graph closely whether that coin moves gradual price fluctuations in the chart. If you non frequent hill level spike in the chart means just those coin and plan to invest on the right according to the above mentioned line.
 I suggest to invest on Litecoin, ETC, BCH, Neo, IOTA and so on. Coins such like these will surely show the perfect bump in the chart.

You need to put more than 75% of your total balance in here if you do not want to lose money on long term.

As you are looking for cheap coins selling today, then I would like to recommend the below list.

1. Electroneum (ETN)
It is very cheap currently, because some weak hands dumped today when they relaunched (today 12pm UK time) their project. Check at cryptopia, few hours ago I saw huge buy orders and this is a sign of price rise soon IMO. Check their telegram, ann, social links for researching before investing.

2. Insane (INSN)
Insane all time high was over 13k sats in july at cryptopia. After that the price fallen a lot, due to one issue mainly which was masternode reward. Insane team hired a well known dev, who is very famous in IT world. The dev is fixing all the issues. So we may get some updates in near future. Currently it is trading over 400sats, and I believe after the update announcement the price will rise again.

I just recommended above two coins, but before investing you should do your own research.

What type of strategy you want to play? That coins depends on what strategy you want to do.
Me, i prefer long trade where i can grow my portfolio slowly and safely. The other one is to short trade and mid term trade.
Short trade means you are going to trade your altcoin in a short period of time. That could risky and tricky since you have to predict what could pump in the following days. Anyway, if you want the must buy top five altcoin. Here it is.

1. Ethereum- long term
2. Iota- long term
3. OMG- mid term
4. Litecoin- long term
5. Bitcoin cash - mid term

Anyway, you can go to coinmarketcap.com to give you some ideas what altcoin is ideal to buy.

Getting advices from this forum is good idea but you don't have to depend on just someone's word, you have to understand everything perfectly and make choise after that. Otherwise you will be without knowledge and maybe without money.
But I'll write my opinion here: For me progressive coin is Dash (not dashcoin), like the way how it goes + great for profitable mining. Also there is a reason why Ethereum is on second place, it's smart contracts and some good features really gives this coin a chanse to follow bitcoin's steps. And would choose monero because it's used in dark places and has potential to replace bitcoin on dark markets.

if you are new i'd say btc should be at least 1/3-1/2 of your cryptocurrency bankroll. but as soon as you ask for the best altcoins to invest my top5 would be ETH, LTC, Monero, XRP and Iota. nothing new, they all are strong and have a huge potential. on your place they would be another 1/3 of my bankroll and the last 1/3 would be some not so popular mid term coins as SYS, GNT etc and some ERC20 tokens from bounty campaigns as soon as you are already on this forum. good luck with your investments!

For today! Instead of buying altcoins with cash, one should buy bitcoin as it is in good buying position. Hold it till 18th 20th Dec. and then convert some part of that BTC into good alts.
Major strong alts have made their movement. NEO, Monero, Walton, .. big rally is still pending.

If you looking for super cheap coin is most like will be higher risk. Better buy the good top popular like etherium litecoin and waves.
Anyway, now if you want to buy low price of altcoin, but not very low. Ioata is the good choice.
