Hello everyone!

Can someone explain to me why I have to link my Dropbox Account with my Trezor in order to be able to name my Trezor accounts? Is this some kind of promotional deal or what is the purpose of this?

Thanks folks

See TREZOR User Manual.

By connecting TREZOR Wallet with Dropbox cloud storage, you can enjoy all these useful features:
•   Rename accounts
•   Label receiving addresses
•   Comment transactions

I'm not a Trezor user as I personally prefer Ledger Nano S so I really am not sure about this, but this is probably because naming addresses, and accounts requires a bit of storage memory. My guess is that the Trezor doesn't have that much memory for these data to be stored so they require you're dropbox account to be connected so the data can be stored there.

Just my guess. Someone correct me if I'm wrong though.

Is this safe? I think one of the reasons crypto was invented was because of the issue with cloud base memory before and now they are connecting it to one of the wallets?hmm

I'm pretty sure linking the Trezor to a Dropbox account is only optional. And if you're actually don't want to link your personal dropbox account, you can create a dummy one, just so your Trezor can store some of those data somewhere else. I'm pretty sure they don't store your private keys or anything important on dropbox anyway.

Thanks for the explanation! That makes totally sense. I also guess that this should be safe. The guys from Trezor seem pretty competent in what they are doing and i don't think that they would be stupid enough to store ANY sensible data on Dropbox!

Hi All

For people who might be reading tis thread as reference, it is also for portability, since a person will be using his Trezor wallet securely on any computer, using Dropbox will insure you will be able to see labels and notes whenever you move from one pc to another..

I wonder why there wasn't more discussion on this topic. While one need nor fear about their crypto being compromised, I do fear that linking Dropbox to Trezor is a sure shot way of leaking enough meta data that you hold crypto.

also the dropbox labels are literally stored in a folder /Apps/Trezor/, which would make it plain the account user owns a trezor hardware wallet.

I have held off labeling anything for now, but was considering a second dropbox account on an unlinked email address to make it less apparent.  otoh it probably beats forgetting why i setup "account #1", "account #2", "account #3" etc. a few years down the line.

I'm a new Trezor user, raising this old thread because I have a similar question.

What happens if I link to Dropbox for labeling accounts and transactions, but then lose access to Dropbox?  Will the accounts/transactions revert to default names, or will I encounter problems reading my accounts?  The instructions say that you can back up the Dropbox file.  Does that mean you can point to a file anywhere on your computer or on a cloud service to use the labels?  Thanks in advance for the help.

Yes, the accounts and addresses will revert to their default names; the transactions won't be labelled at all. There will be no other problems.

Does that mean you can point to a file anywhere on your computer or on a cloud service to use the labels?

No. Trezor saves label data to "Apps/TREZOR" folder which you can backup at any time and that backup can be only restored to Dropbox. Trezor is currently working on Trezor Suite which allows to use either Dropbox or local storage. I have tried using my label data from their web interface in the Trezor Suite, but it didn't work. Apparently, they are not cross-compatible so keep that in mind.

Simple solution: Use Electrum with your Trezor!  Your accounts will each have a separate a wallet file, and you can name it any way you like.  You can label your addresses and transactions.  All information is stored locally on your PC, no cloud, no privacy concerns.

Howdie,

i am planning to buy a Trezor is it now possible to use the Desktop suite for labeling?
The wiki on the website still only describes Dropbox?? Which i find HORRIBLE/totally unacceptable a US based NSA-approved data silo Huh I would have done anything but that.

Makes me wonder if Satoshi labs is as security/privacy driven as they claim...

Yes. As long as you use Trezor Suite, you can keep the label data locally. You can also use Google Drive if you trust them more for some reason. All the metadata is automatically encrypted with your private key.

So the Trezor Suite takes the private key of my Bitcoin Wallet to encrypt the metadata? So if i have 3 different addresses aka wallet1, wallet2 etc. the names of the wallets tx would be encryptet with private key1 pk2 etc?
or Do you mean my password/Key for the Trezor?

Ist it clear in which folder all that data lies? For migrating to another machine?

And of course i don't trust evil corp Cheesy Moving away from Us services and especially cloud services...
