Author Topic: Help please.. sent bitcoin to the wrong email  (Read 50 times)

Hi I’m after a little advice please stupidly I was playing around on Coinbase and have been on Coinbase with btc since 2013
I noticed the transfer with email address and typed in a random made up a@aol.com and sent some btc thinking it would then display the confirmation screenshowong the charges and then I can cancel.. and it didn’t it just said payment sent

Now the btc has gone and I’m not sure where!

Coinbase to coinbase transactions as far as I know are just IOU's and not on chain so transactions are technically not irreversible once confirmed. I guess you should contact their support regarding this and as much as possible provide some proofs. There's only a slim chance of getting your money back so next time don't play with your money.

That's the trouble with Coinbase isn't it? Anyway, by default, if that email exists, I suppose whoever controls it will now get your email inviting them to open a Coinbase account and claim your money. If that email doesn't exist (doubt it doesn't but probably a catch all address) or no one actually signs up to register, then you will get a refund in 30 days.

Try sending an email to a@aol.com, who knows, someone replies? You could try contacting support as PC says, but they're not likely to do anything about it until after 30 days.

P.S. Isn't it time to use a proper Bitcoin wallet, like say, Electrum? Less likely to "accidentally send to random address".

Thank you I have sent a ticket in and I hope it is retrievable.
I know it wasn’t the brightest idea I’ve had! I just expected the confirmation screen to come next with some charge information. The transaction was complete straight away which is worrying.
There is a section on th Coinbase website about btc sent to a wrong account will return after 30’days however this may apply to wallets not email?

Yeah I have electrum on my Mac these where to play with not lose ha
