There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, which will follow the rules of the network no matter what miners do. Even if every miner decided to create 1000 bitcoins per block, full nodes would stick to the rules and reject those blocks.

Limited in number. Limitless in potential.

That might be correct, considering the huge backlog of the network which is over 140k unconfirmed transaction the recommended fee will be set on a huge set of numbers, you can see it here  https://bitcoinfees.earn.com the recommended fee is 0.0009 BTC for the median transaction size of 225 bytes

Yeah, that correct! if you want to send a transaction and want it to get confirmed faster(<10 blocks) then you'll have to pay the default fees or higher, if you're not in a hurry then lower the fees and wait till tx is confirmed.

this tool is really good at estimating the fees(https://estimatefee.com). for ex: if you want to send a tx with 1 input and 1 output and are willing to wait for ~8 hours then you can easily slide down your fees to 0.25 mBTC.
