What about using 1 pci-e to 4 pci-e adapters? This way I was able to connect 5 videocards even to an ancient am2 board with two pci-e slots, there should be even less problems using it with a new AM4 board.

yes but the thing is that i want to use 8 GPUs not 5 or 6
there are enough AM4 Mobos that support up to 6 GPUs
but are there mobos that support more than 6?
thats the question

i think you will find this interesting
https://www.vortez.net/news_story/biostar_crypto_mining_card_enables_up_to_8_gpu_miners.html
but no AM4 motherboard supports it

thats the question

Why do you need 8 cards on an AM4 motherboard?  Why not just buy another 6 slot motherboard to be ready for expansion?

but buying a second motherboard means buying a second CPU /RAMS /HDD and basically building a second rig
i want to have one rig not two

Do you already have 8 GPUs?  If not, then wait until your current rig with up to 6 GPUs generates enough revenue to buy the second motherboard, CPU, RAM, HDD, and power supply.  You need to reinvest your profits into new gear in order to scale up.

I understand people desire rig-density, but you will have many new points of failure on rigs that are too dense.

GPU scaling also tends to bottleneck, better to have separate optimum mining rigs

Don't know if you're still looking, but this can supposedly run 8:

https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/PRIME-X370-PRO/specifications/

...according to someone on this thread:

https://www.reddit.com/r/gpumining/comments/6biqiq/are_there_any_am4_mbs_with_6_gpu_capacity/

I read 6 x PCIE + 1 x M.2, but it's a little unclear whether there's a second (lower speed) M.2

It's possible this one does 8 as well:

https://www.asrock.com/MB/AMD/X370%20Killer%20SLI/index.asp#Specification

I'm reading 6 x PCIE + 2 M.2 (one being ultra)

Bumping this thread, since new CPU's have come out. Was wondering if someone could chime in, especially in regards to future updates. Can these mobos use gen 3 & 3 ryzens going forwards, or new mobos out there?

Check out Asrock X370-MINING board, should be coming out soon. 8 GPU support  without risers.

Indeed really intresting, was scanning through the manual and at page 57 you can read this:

OC Mode
OC1 - 16 cores/3.6GHz on 1.3375V
OC2 - 8 cores/3.7GHz on 1.369V
OC3 - 4 cores/3.75GHz on 1.374V\nMax Stress - 16 cores/3.8GHz on 1.400V

Maybe incoming 16 core 7nm ryzen ?

Neither my X370 or B350 Gigabyte boards support more than 6 GPUs.  I also have a x399 board that I might see how many it supports (only have 3 GPUs in it at the moment).
