Most currencies cannot be bought with USD directly. You'll have to buy Bitcoin first and then buy other currencies using that. To do that you need to use an exchange that has altcoins as well such as Kraken, Bittrex or Poloniex.
These fees sound pretty normal since you have to make a wire transfer. And yes, Coinbase is headquartered in San Fransisco.

I think that soon it will be possible to buy these and other crypts for dollars. And pokachto you can buy them only on stock exchanges such as Poloniex, Bittrex and others.

Coinbase is not the best place to buy cryptos, they are more focused on wallets than exchange and it's a nightmare to get in touch with them. There are far better to buy cryptos such as kraken, bitstamp. you make a deposit usd then buy the crypto you're looking, or buy bitcoin to buy in another exchange where it's used.

Go to CoinMarketCap, choose whatever coin you want to buy and go to 'Markets', use CTRL + F in your browser and search for 'BTC/ALT' by replacing ALT with the coin name (NEM, ETH, etc.)

There are many websites and traders who buy or sell bitcoins. As the knowledge of crypto currencies is increasing in people, everyone is going to buy it. You can buy many crypto currencies like Bitcoin, Ripple, Cardamom and Dash. All buyer and sellers are available on websites, you can directly contact such people and can buy from them. It’s quite easy and simple process and safe too. You can pay cash from your credit card or can direct pay from your bank to buy crypto currencies.

That's correct but keep in mind that only a few altcoins can be bought using fiat. It's the same principle though, just search for USD/ALT.

I buy my BTC on my local exchange with Fiat currency and then I transfer some of it to another exchange that supports both BTC and other Alt coins that I want to buy and then use that Bitcoin to pay for the Alt coins. It is a bit of a nuisance, but the only way to do it for many of the Alt coins I want to buy. Have you tried Bitstamp and Kraken yet?

if I get your question right, then you can open an account using bittrex or polo then use usdt pair to buy those alts which is available from the market, better to understand more about the trading site for those offer alts to usdt pair.

I am waiting for verification of identification to be done on Bitstamp. How long does it take? Kraken, I am not allowed as I am in US.
