So a few years back I got some bitcoin, and pretty much forgot about it. I still have the wallet.dat file, and the passwords/access phrase associated with it. However, I have no idea how I'm supposed to access it any more. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

You should be able to access it just by downloading bitcoin core and restoring it (i think, not sure)

Install whatever wallet you were using before (I'm going to presume It's Electrum since you mentioned the 12 words passphrase). If that's the case you have two options:

1. Install Electrum, go to %appdata%/Electrum and place your wallet.dat there and then launch the wallet.
2. Run the wallet without replacing the file and following the answer here.

It was in a file called "Copay". That is a bitcoin wallet program. However, after downloading the program and attempting to import the file, it kept failing. I have three pieces of information. The passphrase (which is actually just one run-on sentence), the private key, and another long string I assume is the password. None of them worked in decrypting the file. Would I need the same version number?

OK, Copay didn't seem to work, so I downloaded Electrum and it seems to be working fine. However, I'm not sure about the balance. How do you know how much you have? The latest balance says 262.75159mBTC. Can that be correct? I did some mining, so there are several transactions on it. How many bitcoins is that?

If this is correct, how do I sell them? Thanks.

That's the equivalent of 0.262 BTC. You can go to Tools > Preferences > Appearance and change the base unit there. I suggest Bitstamp or Coinbase for selling your bitcoins.
