2000 USD, you can divide it into 10 or more for altcoins trading, but for now i think that's not good idea.
In a few more days, there's an issue for bitcoin hardfork, a lot of hardfork. this issue is really dangerous for altcoins if it really happen.
You can take 1000 USD for BTC, and 1000 for Ethereum and other altcoins that famous enough for trading. (of course with a good amount of volume)

I agree with you that bitcoin has a great future and this is a more reliable investment. But I believe , that by investing in altcoins it is now possible to increase your starting capital. You can buy cheap altcoins, sell them on growth and fix part of the profits in bitcoin. But in order not to get the opposite result it is better first to study the crypto-currency market.

for that $2000, I think you can use $1500 to buy bitcoin right now and use $500 to invest in altcoin. you can choose a cheap altcoin price so you can have a big amount of the coin and you can save in your wallet. I don't suggest buying an expensive coin because we don't know if the coin could increase more or only increase for a little. for a cheap coin, I think you can analyze verge, ripple, dgb, sc, ada, and else and you can buy right now because the price is not too expensive.

this is a good choice but unfortunately, I don't know anything DAT. I invest my money on nxt and xvg and I see this coin increase although it will still increase. I think for $2000, you can divide by only three coin which is nxt, xvg and bitcoin and bitcoin take a big portion for $1000 and for nxt and xvg I will buy $500 for each of coin. I think it is enough if we want to use as long term investment.

As many before said I think 2000 is really low investment for BTC.
