Hi everyone,

I've been reading the boards for several hours a day for about a month now. I started investing in several altcoins a little bit at a time and so far my investment is up 100% over about 17 coins. I'm planning on holding my coins for the long term and I don't see myself losing interest in this stuff any time soon  Smiley

I guess my question is...I'd like to start mining some altcoins, but I'm still not settled on which ones to mine. I don't want to throw out the "which altcoin should I mine?" question like everybody else, but I would like some guidance on a rig that could be used on a variety of coins in the future. I understand that different setups are better for different coins, but does anybody have any suggestions on a semi budget friendly do-it-all rig that would be good for a beginner?

Thanks in advance and thank you all for all of your guidance up until this point. I'm super excited about the future of altcoins!

According to NIST and ECRYPT II, the cryptographic algorithms used in Bitcoin are expected to be strong until at least 2030. (After that, it will not be too difficult to transition to different algorithms.)

I am not sure where you are located but the below guide can walk you through setting up an altcoin mining rig as well as provide a few builds for different budgets for both NVIDIA and AMD cards depending on which way you want to go. These should get you started in the right direction.

Congrats with your coin investment!
For mining, which coin you would like to go? if you already had the answer, post it here most of us could give you the good suggestion.
I assume that you're going to mine big coins only. So basically, if you want to mine BTC, LTC, DASH, you have to purchase Asic miner, for ETH+XMR+ETC, just buy AMD RX series or VEGA, for ZEC/ZEN/BTG/...you should consider AMD GTX. I think at current price, most of coins could make ROI quite fast.

You could take the references here: https://whattomine.com/coins

Thanks again! I'm actually considering not mining the big ones...BTC/ETH/DASH. Right now I'm thinking about picking a couple of undervalued coins that I really believe in that can be mined more easily. My thinking is of course that I can accumulate more of these coins quickly with hopes of a big increase in value in the future. Obviously most anybody on here has more experience than I do and maybe that approach is not the way to go. I know I could make some steady passive income mining the big boys, but I feel like with the smaller altcoins the return could be incredible. Again I'm new and that may not be the way to go. I would love to hear what others think.

All depends on how much you want to spend on gpus how many you are going to run and electricity costs. Pick what gpu you want, have a look to see what others are getting sols mhs and have a look on whattomine. I'm sure that will point you in the right direction.

I have an i-7-2860 QM CPU @ 2.5 GHz with 8 cores

What should my settings be on the Electroneum pool mining software. I have my Mining Port as 7777, but would should my # of threads be. My options are between 1-36

Thanks,

I'd say decide on your GPU architecture as early as possible (AMD vs. NVIDIA) as it seems some coins play better with one than the other. I won't claim to be well researched on that, though. But I started mining myself not long to diversify my portfolio, so I think I get your general game plan. Mixing card types on a single rig also seems like way more hassle that it's worth to start off with. There's plenty of potential on both sides, though. Decide which cards would work best for your, then pick a coin or two (or three) that look promising, and start prepping config/batch files for 'em. 2 cents.
