The best thing you can do with $500 is to invest them inty young projects which are just relased or going to be released soon. Checkout Universa and Bitclave. I believe they should make atleast x20-x50 in one year. Do not miss your chance

In my opinion XSPEC is a pretty good altcoin but I think it will be difficult to raise prices in the near future because it needs to do some more planning to build a great community for itself. Long term investment, XSPEC is quite good, can also consider investing in it.

Try CAPP, Litecoin and Air. These altcoins have average performance for this year in which the increment price value was excellent for a long time investment but if you choose only one i suggest CAPP coin because their ARVR product was quite very good for an investment which already reach Alibaba of China.

Unfortunately I can't advice to get in some top-50 projects right now due to high prices. IMO you need to look at small cap coins which have not been noticed by the market yet like Monetha, PING, BRK.

I can't really recommend you any specific coins because you shouldn't just blindly invest on other's opinions alone.

I would try to find young promising projects with a low price and invest in it as your returns can be much greater. Just be sure to do as much research as you can though.

Under $1? Cardano (ADA). This is a serious project with a very bright future. You could get a lot at this current rate.

To echo others, IOTA is also a great project.

VTC, KMD, ONION are also coins I like, but they're a bit more than you've mentioned.

Best to diversify, so maybe split it between ADA and IOTA (even if it costs a bit more).

Price of a coin isn't the main factor to look into. Who cares if it trades at 20 cents but has a supply of 1000000000 coins. Market cap is what you should actually be looking at while searching for coins.

Ripple, iota and siacoin. These coins are having potential to find the bump in the chart. You please increase the invest on iota or siacoin. These both have the demand in the marketplace growth chart.
Whether you will have the bitcoin or ethereum investing on these kind of potential cheap coin means you will get the profit with in some months. Investing on non potential altcoins will not be perfect option investing it. Still today bitcoin price dumped little in the chart and will get the profit if you invested today also.

Litecoin , iota , neo , sellar are doing very good right now. Litecoin is a whopping $321.33 right now . That is actually the most reliable coin right now following ripple , neo and sellar .
You can get more information about the worth and value of each coin from https://coinmarketcap.com/  . That would help you to take the right decision . I think that $500 is a little less to invest  . It would be great if you take a bigger investment if you have the funds .

If you can tolerate risk of losing 60-80% in a few months and just strongly hodl it. I would recommend that you go for a very good ICO.
This is based on my experience when I started: I placed around $75 to $100 in several ICOs that I studied.
2 of the 10 ICO's that I joined boomed this month - Santiment and Dent.
Both generated 2,000% ROI in 6 months. The rest are still "sleeping" so I hodl still.
