Author Topic: Is this PSU (EVGA 750w BQ) enough to deal with my 3 gpus?  (Read 125 times)

Hey there everyone

Recently I bought a EVGA 750BQ  (https://www.evga.com/products/product.aspx?pn=110-BQ-0750-V1), with the idea of powering 3 gtx 970 g1 gaming which is an specific 970 model that uses 2 power connectors (one 8 pin and one 6 pin) instead of one. When we talk about power, I am totally sure that 750w is enough to feed them, but I am really worried about the power connectors.

The problem is that I just noticed this psu has 3 PCIE cables and 5 molex.  I was planning to connect each gpu 8 pin connector to one of these 3 PCIE cables, and I was planning to use  2 to 6 pin molex adapters to feed the 6 pin gpu connectors. Since the motherboard I bought has one extra molex connection I believe I would be able to solve the gpus power connectors problem, but  is this safe? In this example I would have to power all my riser slots using the infamous SATA to molex adapter that comes with it.

By the way I cannot plug the PSU in the 970s  and test it by myself because the motherboard for this system will probably be delivered where I live only after Christmas.

I really need some help here, because in case I find out that the PSU I bought isnt going to work I need to return it to the seller as soon as possible and buy one that actually works

by the way I just found out these adapters exist:

using 2x sata to molex adapterts like this one to power my risers is a much safer option than using that regular 1 sata to molex that comes with it, right? Funny thing I didn't find anyone mentioning these 2x sata adapters on riser adapters discussion threads, and they seem to be really useful

You should be fine powering each graphics card with one cable from the PSU. (Assuming these cables are designed with a 6(+2) PCIe power connector along with a 6 pin or another 6(+2) pin connector.)

Then you will *probably* be fine powering risers with SATA adapters, so long as you ensure that no more than one riser is powered per line of SATA connections out of the PSU.

I personally wouldn't go with EVGA's BQ line of PSUs, since the OEM is usually HEC or Andyson (the former is okay, the latter, not so much).

Well, as far as I can see, the power req for gtx970 is about 120-150w - so totals will be 360W - 450W -@ max.
So and you can use 6x pin connectors in 8 pin gpu. just short the last 2 pin or use adapters like this

I made my biggest fails starting mining with wrong chosen PSU. Don't buy shitty PSU. I consider (today Wink ) shitty PSU:

1. less 1000W
2. less GOLD efficeny
3. not fully modular
4. less 8 pci-e connectors
5. less 7 years warranty

I stick after several tries with different brands now with Corsair HX (1000/1200)
