If you really want an epic machine, look at the server board section on newegg.

http://www.newegg.com/Server-Motherboards/SubCategory/ID-302

So, for example here's a board: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131861 with dual LGA 2011 slots and 6x 16x PCIe slots

Slap two of these chips in there: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117272

And you'll have 16 cores at 3.8 Ghz Unfortunately each of those chips is $1.9k a peice.

On the other hand, if you go AMD you can get much lower cost chips.  So for example here is an 8 core, 3.1Ghz chip for $345, which you could slap on this board.  Unfortunately it only has 2x 16x PCI express slots though. But definitely cheaper then intel in terms of CPU strength.

(although remember Intel does more per core then AMD, so an 8x Intel will be about as fast as 16x AMD cores - but probably much more expensive)

1.9k?  i thought they were only 1.4

With 2 GPUs how much wattage do you think that would use?
And how bout with 4?  If I want to mine too!

btw, thanks!

Hey everyone!  I am the GOAT master!  BAAA!

I was trying to get into the mining business, but GPU mining is pretty much dead now.. At the moment I'm just trying to build to most TRICKED OUT computer I can (that isn't super expensive).  Tell me what you think about it, and whether all the parts will be compatible!  (I'm really new to this).

Prices and items

Seagate Barracuda LP ST32000542AS 2TB 5900 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5” Hard Drive, currently $117.80
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8198958

Actually will get a SSD instead.

4x Sapphire AMD Radeon 7950 Graphics Card, currently $269.99 each
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202026
Intel Core i7-3820 CPU, currently $299.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115229

Dual xeons?

ASUS Rampage IV Extreme LGA 2011 Intel X79 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Extended ATX Intel Motherboard, currently $415.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131802
4x 8 GB of RAM (more or less, up to 64 GB), about $120-$140
you can find some practically anywhere
LEPA G Series 1600-Watts ATX12V/EPS12V SLI Ready Crossfire 80 Plus Gold Certified Full Modular 240-Pin 1700 Power Supply, currently $280.49
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B007W5TV6K
Powered Risers ($9 each)
http://buyahash.com/products-6/product-details/#cid=194172

Thank you so much!  Smiley
BaaaaaAA!

The list is so naive if you like to do bigger. Perhaps the configuration is okay if in scrypt mining. I think, the timing may be bad idea unless you use your stuff to test something out.

Here, try this setup. (based on ytterbium's)

Server Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131861 with dual LGA 2011 slots and 6x 16x PCIe slots

Xeons if you can afford them: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117272

i7 CPUs as a lower cost alternative: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115229

try this ssd: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820248015 (480 gb, sata iii)

2x for gaming, 4x for some mining, Sapphire 7950 GPUs: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202003 for best cost to mhash for mining as well as for gaming

your PSU looks good I think. (this one: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B007W5TV6K)  1600 watts seems to be enough, maybe even more than enough

cooling: http://www.corsair.com/us/hydro-series-h80i-high-performance-liquid-cpu-cooler.html (liquid cooling if you have the money)

regular fans, which are cheaper. http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-SickleFlow-Computer-R4-L2R-20AC-GP/dp/B0026ZPFCK/

hard drive cooler: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233080

and if you really want a tricked out setup: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16800888036   Grin

Vouch.  Easy to install, setup, and runs really quiet.  Mine has been running since January and does not groan, growl, or make any noise.  Watch the threads on the rad, they are not well tapped and absolutely will strip out if you go 1/4 turn too far.

I put some hideously ugly Noctua's on the H80.  I put the Corsair fans on my mining rig, plugged into a molex they move a _lot_ of air for a 120mm.

!! Will two different CPUs work? !!
No.
Every 2 (or 4) socket system must use exactly the same CPUs. One of the reasons is that both CPUs must have access to all memory and must be able in-validate each other's cache data.

Yes, LOL

A parabola (plural parabolas or parabolae, adjective parabolic, from Greek: παραβoλή) is a two-dimensional, mirror-symmetrical curve.  y = x2

(although remember Intel does more per core then AMD, so an 8x Intel will be about as fast as 16x AMD cores - but probably much more expensive)

sadly thats just true on multithreaded integer operations (xeon e5-4650 vs opteron 6386SE - 3000€ vs 1400€)

if we are talking about single threaded integer operations the xeon is nearly twice as fast as the opteron.

in nearly every other operation the xeon is 20-40% faster than the opteron.

EDIT: AND Core i7 dont support Multi CPU Enviroments. If you want more than one CPU, you need Xeons Smiley

I see all this talk about SATA III SSD`s. If you are going big, why not go for a PCI-e OCZ Revodrive? At least two times faster than any SATA SSD. Smiley

Is it really true that it's two times faster?
If I used a couple of PCIe splitters so I can run 4 GPUs as well as one (or two, if I need to dual boot) of those, how much extra voltage would I use?
(do those use as much energy as a GPU)
