I like the way the private coins are going for the beginning of 2018. There are numerous options and I would assess the risk before going into each, If you're looking for something safer with moderate gains Monero and Verge have an established presence in the market but I like the technology of XSPEC. With a lower supply and relatively low market cap I think it has a lot more room to grow, especially with the rollout of new features coming very soon. Do the research and decide!

If you're only looking for 2x - 3x, I would say to go with ETH and LTC.  Both are safe coins that are guaranteed to go up in value in 2018.

I think bitcoin will remain a top priority as the best coins next year and for altcoin, I definitely have Eth, XMR, LTC and Waves because I think altcoin has a great chance to continue growing and developing in the future well.
