The Bitcoin network protocol was designed to be extremely flexible. It can be used to create timed transactions, escrow transactions, multi-signature transactions, etc. The current features of the client only hint at what will be possible in the future.

From a Ledger Support Ticket Response

Quote
Ledger Nano, Ledger Unplugged and Ledger HW.1 support Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash only.

Ledger Nano S and Ledger Blue natively support:

- Ark

- Bitcoin

- Bitcoin Cash

- Bitcoin Gold

- Ethereum/ Ethereum Classic

- Expanse

- Dash

- Digibyte

- Dogecoin

- Hcash

- Komodo

- Litecoin

- Neo (available soon for the Ledger Blue)

- Pivx

- PoSW

- Qtum

- Stealthcoin

- Stellar

- Stratis

- Ubiq

- Vertcoin

- Viacoin

- XRP

- Zcash

Some other Ethereum tokens (ERC20 tokens) can be managed using Ledger Nano S and Ledger Blue with MyEtherWallet only (it won't work with the Ledger Wallet application):

all the ERC20 tokens supported (click to see the list)

If you have an ERC20 token which is not supported by MyEtherWallet, you can access your account on MyEtherWallet and choose "Add Custom Token" with these information related to the token : Contract address, Token Symbol and its decimals.

When a new altcoin is added to the Ledger Nano S and Ledger Blue, you will only need to download the last app (free) or update the firmware.

please note, that you can install about 5 or 6 applications at the same time on a Nano S, 8 to 10 on a Blue, but you can manage all the coins above by removing and installing the applications. Removing an application won't make you lose your coins, they will still be attached to your wallet. You'll simply have to reinstall the dedicated application - a few seconds process - to manage this coin again.
