Need some help (easy questions)

Ok so my GPU ATI 5770 is mining 168 MH/s but is putting out average of 72C, is this a safe temp? I keep the side cover off my comp btw.
Also my CPU is AMD Phenom BE dual running 2.5 MH/S generating45C is this safe?

Finally for anyone who wants to answer this. I need a way to describe how bitcoins are mined. Like the acctualy process and how they get mined, this is for a couple people I know that are interested in mining.

BTC are mined by doing mathematics. The network has a target that all the miners are trying to match buy guessing a number and then running it through a set of algorithms with the transactions. the result of the guessed number + the transactions is a block. if the block matches the target, it's valid and gets accepted. Bitcoins are created as the first transaction in any block, paid to the miner.

72°C is absolutely fine. (Remember from school: Water freezes at 0°C and boils at 100°C)
I'm running my HD6970 (OC'ed) at 96°C (measured with AIDA64 as "GPU Display Diode") and have just minor issues while mining (means, window animations can be a bit laggy and flash videos result in a complete system freeze, which isn't really a problem because i'm mostly away from my machine)

For your CPU: same as above, it's absolutely fine. With CPU's, dangerous temperatures begin at ~80 to 85 °C. But today's CPU's are designed to automatically shut themselves down when operating beyond a certain temp (about 90 degrees, i guess), so that there is a minimal to zero danger of a "core meltdown".

I have my two ATI 6790's running between 75 - 85 C. I had read on a number of sites that anything less than 100 C won't damage your card, but I was still concerned, so I contacted my card manufacturer (HIS), and they said that even as high as 100 C should be fine. I suspect that they weren't considering continual use like in mining, so my new *play it safe* cutoff is 90 C, but I don't even see how I would get that high without overclocking.

The CPU temp should be considerably lower. The sources I was able to find on the internet recommended keeping the CPU and motherboard temps below 70 C.

I noticed on YouTube most miners seem to have there cases off.  I thought most computer cases were designed with airflow in mind and with it removed you just have convection cooling.  Do you people put external fans blowing on your units (watch the jokes here) to keep them cool?

I'm not doing any mining just curious (and of course looking to get my posts count up ;-) )

Try and underclock the memory. That should drop temps. Are you running stock clocks? 168Mh/s seems low for a 5770.

Feezing computers by watching youtube has nothing to with the temp (here).
my 6950@900 MHz is running at 93C and totally stable with ubuntu
on windows there is a driver problem so that you cannot mine & use hardware acceleration at the same time.

catalyst 10.7 should fix ist.
