I have previously suggested integrating a browser-based GPU miner into the bitcoin forum, that visitors could use to contribute to to help develop and promote bitcoin: http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=25391.0

Along the same lines, how about allowing advertisements on the bitcoin forum, with all funds going towards the bitcoin faucet or a 'bitcoin development fund'?

There are plenty of bitcoin related businesses and services that could buy very targeted ads here, and such ads would help inform the bitcoin community of the services. It seems like it would be good all around.

The grue lurks in the darkest places of the earth. Its favorite diet is adventurers, but its insatiable appetite is tempered by its fear of light. No grue has ever been seen by the light of day, and few have survived its fearsome jaws to tell the tale.

I feel ads with this community would really really be abused.  I almost guarantee someone would be the space for a long period of time just to have a specific message to mess with others.   And if they don't do that, I am doing that, sounds like fun.

Advertising fee for this site would be high so that would deter griefers unless they are willing to spend a lot of bitcoin to have their entertainment.

Fuck ads. If this is implemented it'll simply be one more filter in people's AdBlockPlus and NoScript Smiley

^ Not every one has ad block or dislikes ads, especially when they're highly relevant to the subject of the site.

According to this site http://websitesoutlook.com/forum.bitcoin.org, and I don't know how credible these numbers are, the forum has 216,284 page views a day. That means it could generate $200-300 in ad revenues a day.

The question would be, how would the ads be paid for, with dollars via an established ad network like Adwords, or with bitcoins. If with bitcoins, there is a bitcoin ad bidding network here:

http://www.operationfabulous.com/

Or the site could solicit bids and place the ads manually. That would be more work though, but it would allow for the ads to be screened for the quality of the product/service they're advertising.
