Hi there, I am not involved in bitcoin, but I am neck deep in the barrel-of-monkeys fun world of B2B lead gen. I had a client recently suggest I build a list of US based professionals who are "involved" in bitcoin. Process works like this: I crawl web in real time looking for digital exhaust related to bitcoin topics, extract names of people doing the talking, and then append LI profiles and emails addresses from 4 global sources.

This is not a stale database. These will be individuals who in the previous 90 days were discussing bitcoin or related topics.

Would love to get the community's feedback on value of such a list.

I crawl web in real time

What does that mean?  You are instantly notified when someone on an obscure website posts something about bitcoin?

I am guessing it's more like how you try to detect scammers here. Surely you don't have an automated radar or something.

I do not have a real time radar. And I promise this is not a scam (which I know is how every scammer prefaces their scams).

The process works like this: one describes their ideal prospect; in the case of bitcoin it might be mentions of the terms bitcoin, ethereum, blockchain, or whatever other terms/phrases are important to you. We then open up hundreds of concurrent google/bing searches and go many pages deep looking for conversations around these terms/phrases. (This board likely appears as a source.) We throw all the results into amazon, which does an analysis of all the text, some of which naturally rises to the top as being more relevant than other gibberish. We then try and map these conversations to real people, and append their email addresses and linkedin profiles. For just about any search we can find thousands of individuals.

some people call it "machine learning" or AI or some other hocus pocus description. we just call it clever code.

it's far from perfect but it's pretty damn good and saves a lot of time. The lists are particularly tight for bitcoin-y terms/phrases because the terminology is so discrete.

So what if someone says something like this on Meetme (a vaguely irrelevant social networking site) "Bitcoin makes Venezuelans currency look good" .. considering this is a negative statement against btc. How would that be interpreted by your clever code? And what form of consent are you seeking from the individual whose addresses/profiles you're digging out?

Off course I understand that putting anything online means you lose your anonymity anyway, but still. Are your clients even bothered about the consensual aspects?

As to your original question. Such a list could be very useful for someone who's launching an ICO or has something relevant to sell. Basically, you're selling them a gigantic "cookie" that could subject these individuals to targetted spam / ad whatever you call it.

Q: So what if someone says something like this on Meetme (a vaguely irrelevant social networking site) "Bitcoin makes Venezuelans currency look good" .. considering this is a negative statement against btc. How would that be interpreted by your clever code?

A: If only one person said it once, it would be ignored; but if this person was discussing Bitcoin and Venezuela regularly, AND a user asked us to find people with an interest in Bitcoin and Venezuela, that someone may be shortlisted.

Q: Are your clients even bothered about the consensual aspects?

A: Yes and no. B2B marketing happens, and yes most of it sucks. So the idea is to stop spamming 10s of thousands with a "Hey, interested in bitcoin???" email, and instead allow an attorney to shortlist 50-100 people who were discussing cryptocurrency contracts offering her unique services. But yes, the emails would be unsolicited, but hopefully relevant.  our clients are seeing open rates in the 70% range and response rates in the 15-30% range.

Additionally, the cost to build these lists is in the ~$0.50 per name range, which makes the list too expensive for spammy products.

You are doing well, if I was on your position I would also do the same, yeah it is the common way, it really takes time and consuming but worth it because you are providing genuine accounts, addresses and attaching other important informations. But make sure that those you've listed are still recently active.

I am guessing it's more like how you try to detect scammers here. Surely you don't have an automated radar or something.

(or do you??)

To be fair, I only need to crawl a few forums here - not the entire web.   Wink

I understand now how the OP is going to do it, but I'm pretty sure Google will blacklist him pretty quickly if he plans to "open up hundreds of concurrent google/bing searches and go many pages deep looking for conversations around these terms/phrases"

A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing. Both Google and Bing have custom search engines that encourage the practice we perform. If there was anything illicit I likely wouldnt have shared it on a public forum. Secondly, you'll find echo chamber conversation in most forums.  Majority of conversation happens, well, every where else. The challenge is harvesting it (our job) and assessing meaning (amazon and IBM's job). Then finding contact info (my partner's job). Then packaging it up and delivering an audience for the marketer to do whatever outreach they intend to do.

I told you above exactly how I do it. I welcome your efforts to try and replicate it Smiley
