I'm not sure if it is because when the price goes up, the value of my portfolio goes down because of the deflation.

Do you trust the exchange?  Do you trust the company you're buying the equity in?  To date I know of no exchange that backed by any real regulatory body.  so that operator if operating in a country where such oversight is required could be shut down at any time.  If that occurs how do you get you money back.  Short answer, you don't.  So while the decentralized nature of Bitcoin is great there is not a good decentralized infrastructure for everything. 

There is an opportunity to design and build on though. 

on the other hand,

Trading with BTC is equivalent to using EURO to trade in when you live in the USD world.  Fluctuation in the EURO/USD affect your profitability.  There just so happens to be larger fluctuations in USD/BTC or any currency/ BTC for that matter.
