I am building a rig with 7 evga gtx 1070ti hybrids (217 watts each stock). I already have a 1300 watt EVGA G2 PSU. What size PSU should I buy for my second one to maximize efficiency? I know it's best to use a smaller percentage of the psu's capacity. What size would be best to add?

Second, how should I distribute those connections? How many cards to the 1300 PSU and how many cards to the PSU I will add?

edit* I originally wrote 8 gpu's but it will actually be 7.

You could have just got (2) 1000W psu's and been done with it.  I don't like mixing and matching.  Get two of the same.  Hopefully you'll be sub 150w/card after tweaking though, so you could probably go with (2) 850W psu's.  Just do the math and figure out how you're going to connect each gpu to the psu.  I'm running into the same problems trying to downgrade from (2) 1000W psu's on a six gpu 1070ti rig (each gpu requires two 8 pins) that is only pulling 820W at the wall.

I have rigs running on 8 pin to dual 8 pin cables that are authentic evga cables with no issues.  Can't get those anywhere that I've found, so I've ordered some splitters from Amazon that have good reviews.  Can't wait to test those out, but you need spare single 8 pin cables for those ... I have a ton, but you may not.

Follow this advice. If you use the exact same power supply buying spares or even having them on hand is easy.  Also invest in a power supply tester.  I cannot emphasize this enough.  When running multiple cards like this it will make troubleshooting much easier.

you can also try to use a 2kW server power supply for all the GPUs with pico power supply for the motherboard.

I have the 1300 from a previous build. I sold the other cards and decided to upgrade to the 1070ti's. So yeah, I wish I could have just bought 2 1,000's but I already had the 1300. So I guess I should just add another 1300 to be safe. I don't like the idea of mixing two different sizes either.

This won't be my last build so I could go bigger on the next to utilize the 1300's better and swap them out with 1,000's when I order for my next build.

this guy has good advice.


Go with corsair certified PSU, or rosewill these are the best psu manufacturers in the world.


but you have the evga it can run 7 1070 ti's  set at 70% tdp  if you have a riser free onda b250

if you are still doing risers  it is much harder to get a good setup.


but  you could still  just use the evga 1300 .

 I would settle on a six card build if I was risers

I will explain the layout issues you have with the evga  trying 7 cards on a riser setup

a 1070 ti set at 105 watts  is very efficient

and six fit easy  with risers.

2 of the  pcie cables  are 8 pin 6 pin
4 of the  pcie cables are 8 pin

So  you can do 6  and have 2   6pin   they could power risers  but  this psu is better for 6 cards  if you have risers.

Phillip is the man, so whatever he says is what I would consider doing.  Personally, I would go with an 850W or a 1000W providing that you are able to connect everything and have close to equal power draw.  You can be equal on the cards, but you still have to power everything else.

I have an msi z270 mb with 6 slots. I was going to use a m.2 to pci-e for the seventh card. I will certainly take your advice for the next build and go with the corsair certified/rosewill and the Onda b250. I saw that you posted your contact for that board in one of the threads. But for now I'm trying to make the parts I have work.

If I ditch the 7th card would the 1300 PSU safely work? Or am I better off running 2 1300's for now and just utilizing them on the next build and swap them out with 2 1,000's down the road?

I've only  been here for a few weeks but I quickly learned that Phillip is the man. I'm thankful to be able to get his advice (as well as everyone else's).

two 1000w psus seem the best option actually, search online to see what have the best ratio efficiency/power, now you might go with a decent 700w psu

go back  up  I just described a six card setup easy peasy .   it is the cheapest most efficient way to go with  that psu.

Hold a card to the side  and plan for the next build.

if you go six cards that psu can give each card 130 watts  with ease  no stress on the psu.

2 1000 watt psus make no sense  for this build as he owns a perfectly good 1300 watt that can do   a great six card build.
