Pretty much agree with you, they deserve it because they provide us this place to grow together as a community. To be remembered, those 8000 bitcoins are not valued with current value, I believe it is accumulation since this forum was announced a few years back. Beside that, the value this forum gives bac to the community is more than 8000 bitcoins I suppose Grin

They are the only non profit organization that I know of..we have never seen users.. spending anything to make an account here...also we do find excellent...job opportunities here and we can easily earn bitcoins here and..take care of our expenses..
I have never seen such site.. it's like a perfect example..of finding employees and .. at the same time a great platform for people who wanna advertise something here.
It's really.. nice that people are out here donating money,
I agree they really deserve it.

The founder of this site is now a millionaire.

I doubt that.
You (and other) forgot to consider that a large number of the bitcoins have been donated and/or paid when the price was under $1,000 or $500 or less.
Then there is the cost of running the forum: hosting, staff, DDOS protection (which is not cheap) and all extra stuffs.
I am not even talking about the development of the new forum project.

Bitcointalk is a for-profit business. The comments about not-for-profit are coming from gullible guys with rose tinted glasses on  Grin

And yeah theymos is probably in Dubai right now catching some rays

Are you referring to theymos or satoshi?

I think it would probably be a bit of a stretch to believe theymos has 140k+ BTC. For satoshi, this would be well below the lower bound estimates of his holdings.

You might be correct to have confirmed that the total amount of that has been received but the way people are looking at it makes it seems more than that without considering salient issues which are

1. The amount is for the entire time the forum has been, which at that time someone who is OK can conveniently donate quite an amount a visit to donate section would show.

2. The amount of outflows that have gone out to pay the mods, hosting and a whole lot of administrative functions which is not that easy a lot of other individuals have tried running a forum but its just as easy as it seems.

3. Transparency is what made you see such amount which is something like that.

Theymos is obviously loaded. Good for him, he was clever enough to realize the importance of Bitcoin and immediately started a Bitcoin forum and even got satoshi posting on it too... this forum will always be legendary because of that.

The donations... well back then, 50 BTC was nothing, nowadays is a fortune, I wonder if it is fair that the to have the donation badge you still need to donate 50 BTC as if nothing has changed? Or maybe it's good to leave it at the same amount to showcase how USD depreciates against BTC overtime.

Errr no, Satoshi himself created this forum in 2009. Theymos has not even registered yet until early 2010. He was the 4th person to become an admin here IIRC, after Satoshi, Sirius, and Gavin, and the only person (from those people) to stick with it until now.

You should not be in doubt about what Kajune said, most probably he (who created) is a millionaire or billionaire now.
But beside these expenditures on forum protection and maintenance the staff deserves more, they are handling it pretty well from the beginning and hope so they will continue to make it more better day by day.
