I use aluminum on as the frame and lay my motherboard down on some pine. It's fun to build but takes a bit more time than just buying a wire cart. It's probably more expensive as well. I think mine cost somewhere in the $50-60 range for materials (3x 96in angle aluminum [$15 ea.], 2x 96in pine [$2 ea.], 8x grommets [$0.50-$1 ea.], various screws [$5 tops]).
I think a wire frame works fine. I have just become accustomed to the above.
