Transactions must be included in a block to be properly completed. When you send a transaction, it is broadcast to miners. Miners can then optionally include it in their next blocks. Miners will be more inclined to include your transaction if it has a higher transaction fee.

I don't trust MtGox/TradeHill/any other site that requires you to "deposit" funds into before making a transaction

Interesting that the seal would just disappear though, I remember seeing it yesterday

It goes away when you log in to keep clutter down.
Let me know if it's not there when you logout.

Additionally you shouldn't trust someone just because they have a seal.
I'm not sure how an exchange is going to operate though that doesn't receive the funds before you make a trade.
Open to suggestions. I'd prefer to not hold any funds at all if that is a possibility.

For example: bitmarket.eu doesn't hold any funds, but leaves it to the buyers and sellers to settle their own trades. Some people prefer this, but it does have its problems.
