How to sweep BTC paper wallet and which software use

Hello,

I'm planning to sweep my paper wallet which contains BTC and Bitcoin Gold and send some to an exchange.
What desktop wallet would you recommend for this and how would I go about sweeping both currencies from the paper?
I know I have to sweep it all at once or I will lose everything thats left.

I have 0 experience with this I only had my BTC on exchange and went from there to paper never desktop so any advice is much appreciated.

I would suggest using Electrum (for BTC) and ElectronCash (for BCH)... They're both "lightweight" SPV (Simple Payment Verification) wallets that don't require you to download the whole blockchain etc. They support sweeping...

Be very careful where you download the files from, there are a LOT of fake scam sites for these two wallets, designed to steal private keys/seeds etc. You should really check the digital signatures of the downloaded files before using them.

Thank you for your reply. I successfully installed electrum and checked the PGP signatures so I'm good to go with my bitcoin.

Although I don't think you fully understood my problem. I do not own BCH but BTG the lasted forked coin if I remember correctly. And I don't think either electroncash nor electrum supports BTG.

For safety, make sure your BTC is transfered and confirmed before importing your private keys into any other wallet.

I do not own BCH but BTG the lasted forked coin if I remember correctly. And I don't think either electroncash nor electrum supports BTG.

Do you really need a desktop wallet (I have no experience with which to trust for Bitcoin Gold), or can you use an Android phone? If you can, I suggest to use Coinomi. It's not open source, and I don't trust it with large amounts of money (just like I don't trust anything on my phone with a lot of money), but it works quite easy to import a paper wallet and send the funds somewhere.
Bonus: You can also use Coinimi to claim your airdropped BitCore (BTX).

Unfortunately I only own an old 4s with old iOS and none of the wallets are supported on my device. If I understand it correctly though I can just sweep my paper wallet with electrum to obtain my BTC keep the paper wallet aside get a cheap android phone in the future and sweep the BTG later right?

I'm asking because I know I'm supposed to sweep all the coins on paper wallet otherwise the rest will be lost in the void so I don't know how it is with forked coins.

I googled for quite some time and I haven't find any legit looking BTG desktop wallet so I guess I'll just have to buy a new phone.

Bither is actually working on my old iOS but never heard of it before. I'm kinda reluctant to just sweep all my BTC to it. Can I do it other way though?
Is it possible to sweep the BTC to my electrum desktop and then insert my private key to bither and send the BTG onto exchange deposit address?
The other app mentioned in the tutorial you posted isn't compatible with my device so I think this is the only way it could work right?

Yes, you can do that. Just write a note on the paper wallet: no Bitcoin left, only Bitcoin Gold (and BitCore). The list of forks gets longer, you may or may not have more forks on it already. It's hard to keep track what's real and what isn't nowadays.

Forks are coins on a different chain, it shouldn't move when you move other coins (unless their replay protection fails, but so far that seems to be working just fine).

Coinomi says "coming soon" to iOS, but if your coins are worth it, an extra phone is a small investment. I'm paranoid with forked desktop wallets too.

Yes. There's no need to keep your Bitcoin on the paper wallets. You could of course just transfer them to a new (unused) paper wallet.
People have actually lost their Bitcoins trying to claim Bitcoin Gold through fake wallets/websites. There's absolutely no need to risk your Bitcoins, you can move them already and figure out how to use your Gold later.
