I know that Mt.Gox offers exchange services. However, they take to long due to the wire transfers that are required. Is there a faster mechanism out there for exchanges?

Sure, but some of them can be inconvenient or carry some risk, and some can carry higher fees.
Examples:
- Look on localbitcoins.com to see if you have a local seller willing to meet up with you quickly and exchange cash for bitcoins face-to-face
- Look on localbitcoins.com to see if someone in your country is accepting electronic payment for bitcoins
- If you are anywhere near Chicago, meet up with me for a face-to-face exchange of cash for bitcoins at a rate 5% higher than the last Mt Gox exchange
- Send me cash via Western Union (you pay the fees), and I'll send you bitcoins exchanged at 5% higher than the last Mt Gox exchange
- Send cash (or U.S. postal money order) to my P.O. Box, and as soon as it arrives (pay for guaranteed overnight if you're in a hurry) I'll send you bitcoins exchanged at 5% higher than the last Mt Gox exchange
If you are in the U.S., you could also take a look at BitInstant (although they've been having some issues lately), Coinbase.com, and CampBX.com.
If you are buying more than 20 BTC at a time, I might consider reducing my fee below 5%.
