is there such thing as a best? or is all the 1080 ti cards close to the same speeds?
I see them with different clock speeds as well.

Some vendors release the 1080TI overclocked, which has some higher clocks when compared to the founders edition. You could google for coil whining and rule out the brands of which coil whining is reported.3 Fan designs have a higher heat capacity and cooling rate, but if aesthetics is your thing I would go for the founders edition (like I did )

Overclocked cards are slightly different, but generally the profit will not be affected. Usually you need to pay more attention to such parameters as temperature and noise.

All cards have almost the same power. An important point here is the cooling system. Cards with three fans are the coolest. And do not take an aorus, in them the leakage of a term interface is revealed.

I have few Aorus 1080ti extremes, they run very hot compared to 1080ti MSI gaming X or MSI Duke. Big fan of MSI cards. I have 1060, 1070 and 1080ti-s very quiet and very good performance and run cooler than others.

I'm curious since I have several of these.

Price & availability, cooling system, power connectors, and your odds in the silicon lottery are key factors.
For GPUs as powerful as the 1080ti, I usually stay away from models with blower-style coolers, unless the price difference makes them worth considering. Liquid cooling is usually an unnecessary luxury.
Some 1080ti models have an 8-pin PCIe connector and a 6-pin connector, but others have 2x 8-pin connectors. Those with dual 8-pin connectors can be a bit more of a pain to power, especially for a rig with several cards. (This is largely about the number of PSU connectors you have available, but some also say that those with 2x 8-pin connectors are less efficient than the 8 & 6-pin cards, in general.)
Cards with higher factory overclocks *may* have better chances in the silicon lottery, since you are guaranteed the extra overclocking potential. However, I do not consider this worth paying much extra for.
Card manufacturer/brand name may or may not be important for you as far as customer support goes. All card manufacturers have mixed reviews there, regardless of what diehard fans/haters may suggest.

MSI is bad company, their temp sensor lies about real temp by 5-15%, GTX 1070 Gaming X while mining are dying as flies (VRM is very bad cooled)... duno about TI but I would stay away from MSI and mining Have few 1080ti aorus no problems so far... can compare are all rest cards are 1070 which are Gainward Phoenix (palit gamerock, jetstream) ULTIMATE best all around card ever build!

If you goes with the same series of cards in the same brand you will not get the anything to do. Then if you overclock perfectly you no need to worry about the heating issue or anything. I am not sure which brand you are mentioning about the different clock speed. Actually all we need to worry about the hashes producing for the concern coin and cards according to mining field users.
